Letter: Courageous story
Re “One of the 26 percent,” Sunday Monitor Viewpoints, March 17:
Annmarie Timmins, my deepest appreciation to you for sharing your personal story. Your article required tremendous personal strength, and I can only hope that by attaching a “face” and further humanizing the issue of mental health care, your story will help diminish the “otherness” that surrounds this pressing issue. Indeed, as your words perfectly illustrate, the individuals who need our collective support are our friends, neighbors, co-workers, and members of our own families.
It has been said that “taxes are the price we pay for civilization.” If, by “civilization” we are referring to the social and ethical connections that bind us as individuals together, I can only hope that the courage you have displayed succeeds in reminding our legislators of their fundamental ethical obligations to the individuals and communities they serve.
Thank you again, Ms. Timmins, for your thoughtful and courageous words.
