Letter: Don’t blame the messenger

Kudos to the Concord Police Department for patrolling last month’s Merrimack Valley High School dance and the resulting arrests in the parking lot for underage drinking. Shame on the apologists who would not only defend the youths’ actions rather than praise the public safety efforts, but also blame the messenger.

Concord Monitor news reports appeared to tell the story as journalists should, not with any malicious aim at those involved. The young woman who wrote to defend her actions ( “A fuller picture of me, MV,” Monitor letter, March 26) cited the lack of “positive” coverage on a day the front page showed a photo honoring a teacher in the same school district for doing an outstanding job in her field. Perhaps the young woman who is now so concerned over potential consequences was so self-absorbed that she missed an earlier report: that of two Ohio teens convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage girl who had been drinking. Underage drinking is more than a youthful rite of passage when it leads to tragic outcomes. No one expects perfect behavior, but we should all expect to take responsibility for our own actions.
