Letter: Alcohol, cars are a deadly mix
It has been thought-provoking following the various reactions to the report about underage drinkers in the parking lot at a school-sponsored event at Merrimack Valley High School (“MV students arrested at dance,” Monitor front page, March 23). These responses clearly came from a wide range of ages.
The article was written to inform. In no way did the reporter disparage the school or the young people involved. It is a teachable moment.
The school appears to have a caring administrator and an effective resource officer who work in tandem. Tragedy was averted that night.
Experience and time will enlighten the students about the deadly mix of alcohol and a powerful piece of machinery. In his March 28 letter to the editor, Steve Blanchard spoke quite movingly about it. It’s a topic important enough that the more opportunity to make young people aware of the heartache it can cause, the better. Let’s be careful not to pass this off as a rite of passage.
The girls involved should thank their lucky stars things unfolded that night just as they did.
