Letter: Ayotte, NRA are looking after our interests
I applaud Sen. Kelly Ayotte for standing strong on her promise to protect our Second Amendment rights from a segment of our political system and our population bent on eliminating them.
The tragedies of the school shootings are just that, tragedies. What I know for sure is that I did not do them. What I also believe to be true is that had the recently defeated legislation been in effect at the time, the results then and in the future would not be any different. What was sure to happen was further erosion of our constitutional rights by legislators and social and cultural policy power brokers whose ultimate objective is the disarming of the law abiding American citizenry.
If the National Rifle Association had some influence in the matter, good. I am an unapologetic member. The NRA works to help protect the interests of me and others regarding legal firearms ownership. I sometimes think it sad that such an organization has to exist, but it is necessary to maintain a solid well-funded position to defend against other well-funded antithetical people and organizations that see fit to eliminate our freedoms. The NRA is no different in those respects from the American Civil Liberties Union or Amnesty International or other citizens’ advocacy groups protecting other constitutional interests of their members.
Thank you, Sen. Ayotte, for seeing the big picture.
