Letter: Why not stained glass art on Main Street?
The mayor has asked for public input on the Main Street plans. Where are the creative people of Creative Concord that the chamber of commerce is trying to brand Concord with?
One of the biggest problems with the plan is the enormous number of trees that will block views of the historic downtown and businesses and create an ongoing maintenance cost. One creative person I know had a fantastically marvelous idea. Since everyone loved the old street clock, let’s have a bunch of them instead of some of the trees. Instead of clock faces, have stained glass art. Light them at night, and it will be an attraction for Concord, not an unkempt mini-park. They will be in “bloom” year round. Seating and or planters can be incorporated at the bases. Shade devices and street lighting can be added. The cost? Not that much compared to the 10-year cost of trees and the short tripping fences around them.
What if the city puts in a removable decorative slab where many of the trees go. The businesses in the immediate area can decide if they want a tree or a beautiful piece of art. I am sure that corporations and artists would donate to the cause for their name on a plaque.
Well, Creative Concord, what are your ideas?
