Report to Readers: Help us pick a puzzle!

If you’re a regular Monitor reader and a fan of brain-teasers, you’ve no doubt already mastered our daily puzzle offerings: Sudoku, the Jumble, the hard crossword puzzle, the less difficult crossword.

We’ve had the same lineup for many years – and it’s time to shake things up.

We’re planning to add a new puzzle to the daily newspaper sometime soon. Before my voicemail is filled angry messages from panicked Jumble fans, rest assured we’re not taking anything away – just adding something new. And we’d like your help.

Beginning Monday, we will publish samples of three potential newcomers: KenKen, Seven Little Words and Word Roundup.

KenKen bills itself as “the logic puzzle that makes you smarter.” It’s a numbers game, originally from Japan, and it relies on good, basic math skills.

Seven Little Words is something like the Jumble puzzle, but perhaps a bit trickier. Its creators promise that you’ll like it even if you don’t typically like word games. (Let’s find out!)

Word Roundup is a slightly more complicated version of an old-fashioned seek-a-word puzzle. The words you’re seeking are not given to you directly, but rather through clues.

We will publish the new puzzles all next week. In Monday’s newspaper, you’ll find our “Pick a Puzzle” contest on Page A7. The rest of the week it will likely appear on different pages; we’ll tell you on the front page where you can find the new puzzles each day.

Check them out and see what you think. When you have a favorite, let us know. We’ll be taking responses at this email address: You can also send in your responses via mail to “Pick a Puzzle,” Concord Monitor, PO Box 1177, Concord, NH 03302-1177.

The deadline for voting is May 15. Please, just one entry per person.

Two ideas. Strimko or Wordstream, both challenging and fun.
