Letter: Wall contradiction

Conservative Americans’ greatest hero, exceeding, I believe, Jesus Christ, is Ronald Reagan. We constantly hear the rebroadcast of President Reagan saying, “Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall!” Yet these people want to build a wall on the Mexican border.

Go figure.

Apples, meet oranges.

Correction: Germany was pulled together from city states around 1887 and lasted until the Allies divided it after WWII about a little over 55 years, not centuries. Most of the southwest land was taken from Mexico by Americans to be. Maybe Mexico should have built a wall to keep us out of their country.

"Most of the southwest land was taken from Mexico by Americans to be."....You mean like US Grant, Robert E Lee, Sherman, Meade, Stonewall Jackson...We fought a war over that territory, and won. If we 'took" Mexico's land, then we also "took" Brittish land. If you'd like to give your land back to the Brittish...feel free.

As if anybody cares: Mexico built a legal "wall" by outlawing slavery long before the US did. The troubles began when Norteamericano filibusters (Yes, look it up) settled in Texas and brought their slaves with them. The gringos flagrantly broke Mexican law, created multiple incidents with Mexican authorities and ultimately argued their alleged mistreatment at the hands of Mexico as casus belli. The intersection of Southern politicians' desire for more slave-holding territory and Manifest Destiny made war with Mexico just about inevitable. Not relevant to actual masonry, but a bit of must-know history that the textbooks all seem to ignore.

So what is your point, you want to right all of the wrongs of history? How principled and thoughtful of you to make amends. You must want reparations for something that happened 5 or 6 generations ago. Heck, why don't we just sign over the Southwest to Mexico. I am sure with their track record of human rights, drug trafficking and economic management it would be no time before it is improved.

Reparación, no. Reconquista, no. My point? Nothing more than that US history is not the all hearts and flowers fairy tale that our school kids learn. Because America seems unable to practice honest national self-examination, America is similarly unable to avoid repeating the same errors over and over again.

History causes us to repeat it.......sorry, I am not a blame America for everything kind of patriot.

More than a geography lesson is needed here. The Berlin wall wasnt constructed to keep people out, no, it was to stop the massive defection. As far as I know, it is still against US law to enter the US by crossing the Mexican border.

Maybe Mexico wasn't part of the USA but California, New Mexico and Texas used to be part of Mexico. So much for the HISTORY lesson and Germany was was divided up many times by Napoleon and many other countries of Europe and actually only existed as a whole country between the two World Wars of the 20th century.

Mexico is not part of the United States, they share a border with us. A country without sovereign borders is not a sustainable country. There is no analogy between Berlin-Germany and Mexico-United States.

Um, a geography lesson is in order here. Berlin, and both halves of Germany, were one city and nation for centuries, until the end of WW2. Reagan was calling for reuniting the nation. Where as Mexico was never part of the USA. Understood?
