Letter: Airport bus schedule could be made more convenient
The test run of the buses to and from Concord and the Manchester airport is long overdue and wonderful. I hope a lot of people make use of it. I plan to. But there are a few issues.
1. The buses will run only on weekdays. If I am flying Tuesday and returning Saturday, for example, I won’t have a bus to get back to Concord. I will probably decide to drive and park at the airport, even though there is a bus to get me there on Tuesday.
2. The buses depart Concord at the following times: 3:55 a.m., 5:05 a.m., 6:20 a.m., 8:55 a.m., 11:25 a.m., 12:35 p.m., 2:55 p.m., 5:55 p.m., 9:45 p.m., 10:45 p.m., 11:45 p.m. and 12:45 a.m. Note that in the late evening there are four buses within three hours. That is very convenient. Midday, however, is more problematic. Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. there are only four buses. Something similar applies to return times. If the bus is convenient for my outbound flight, will I take it, knowing that I will have to wait three hours for a bus after my return flight lands midday?
I worry that if this is to be a test of ridership, it may not meet expectations. The schedule must be convenient for the round-trip, not just one way. I suspect that doubling the number of scheduled trips would more than double the total ridership.
3. The $4 fee seems very low. I would certainly be willing to pay $10 or $12 each way if the service was going to be convenient to my flight times.
4. If the bus does attract good ridership, even given the scheduling issues, parking at Stickney Avenue will need to be expanded. There have been times when it has been impossible to find a parking space at that lot even without this new bus service.
