Letter: Thank Franklin Pierce for that gold dome

Re “State House dome to receive a golden makeover” (Sunday Monitor Local & State section, July 14):

Though I applaud the Associated Press’s Norma Love’s article regarding the State House dome and its refurbishing, I would be remiss if I did not not voice my sincere curiosity as to why there was no mention of our 14th president, Franklin Pierce, or more specifically the original intent of a gold dome.

Though this has been watered down over the years, as have most original intentions, the gold dome was originally intended to be authorized only for states that have produced a president.

Though a good article, it completely ignored historical relevance, aside from highlighting cost analysis.

You can talk about cost and statistical analysis surrounding past ventures of reconstruction all day long. In New Hampshire, we value our history.

Kraig, I heard the same description of the "gold dome". Is there documentation for this authorization of gold domes? I for one would like to research it for historical reasons.
