Letter: Talk about draconian!
My father at age 97 has been since the 1950s a staunch civil rights advocate. He always taught my brother, sister and me that every person has an inherent dignity that needs protection and recognition under the law.
Of course, I agree with that, but I and many others also believe that this applies to babies in the womb. They’re people too, and common sense and modern science tells us this is so.
That’s why Katy Burns’s column in the July 21 Sunday Monitor about the “draconian” new laws across the county limiting abortion (“A war on women?”) was so off the mark. This issue is just not going to go away despite what she and others who hold similar views think.
Do they know how many people turn out every year for the Right to Life march in Washington? The numbers keep growing.
Hundreds of thousands – or was it a million who were there last January? And so many of them were young people.
Roe vs. Wade may be the law of the land since 1973, but because it abrogates our most basic right, the right to life, there will be continued protests and laws attempting to curtail it.
And with organizations like Planned Parenthood actively promoting abortion, all the more reason.
One glaring statistic brings this home. For every adoption referral they make, there are 145 abortions. Now that is draconian!
