Letter: The power of addiction
I want to praise the Monitor for the article about drug abuse in Saturday’s paper (“Heroin leads overdose deaths as numbers surge,” front page).
People do not know the extent of the problem, especially the lack of available resources for getting help. I know a young an who wants to go to rehab but cannot find anywhere, especially without medical insurance.
I would also love to see some reporting about the methadone clinic in Concord. Are people aware of how many people go there to get a legal “fix” of this methadone, under the guise of helping people get off heroin? From personal observance, it does not work. I would really like to see some research done about it. I just don’t understand. Why would you substitute one opiate for another?
This article was certainly a start. I hope it might open the eyes of people who just do not understand the power of addiction, the difficulty in getting clean and the lack of rehab possibilities.
