Letter: A new arms race
The arms race of the superpowers of the world has, thankfully, moderated significantly since the ending of the Cold War. But we’ve spawned a new domestic equivalent. Many of our elected officials believe that citizens should and need to arm themselves for their own protection, which means that not only do the good guys become more heavily armed, but so too do the bad guys.
That means our police departments need to become more heavily armed.
This isn’t just a BearCat for Concord; in time it means a BearCat for every small city in America. That’s big bucks paid for by you and me (or borrowed from China on our tab).
The irony is that we’re demobilizing our highly-trained, very professional armed forces, while at the same time we’re putting more weapons in the hands of local police forces, many of which don’t begin to have the arms training of our armed forces.
