Letter: Pelosi – and more!
Re “Not just Hillary” (Monitor Forum, Sept. 27):
If three mayors, a state attorney general and three appointees who never ran for public office can be considered as having serious presidential credentials, then certainly the House minority leader and first woman to serve as speaker of the House – Nancy Pelosi – was a serious omission from your list!
If being a female U.S. senator qualifies one for your list, you left out only one: Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii.
Among notable U.S. representatives that could be added: Democrats Maxine Waters and Loretta Sanchez of California, Democrat Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, Democrats Nita Lowey and Louise Slaughter of New York, Democrats Sheila Jackson Lee and Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas and Republican Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, along with Democratic Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton of D.C. Each of these women has served more than a decade in Congress and displayed effective leadership in a body that’s become notable in recent years for getting little accomplished.
