Longtime New Hampshire Executive Councilor Ray Burton announced yesterday that his cancer has returned and he won’t be running for re-election.

Burton, 74, said he won’t be running again for the Executive Council or the Grafton County Commission because of his health. He first announced in February that he had curable kidney cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy, but the cancer later went into remission and he resumed his travel and meeting schedule.

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my cancer has returned,” Burton said in a statement. “After several days in and out of the hospital I will be heading home to Bath, N.H., to rest.”

Burton, a Republican, was elected to his first term in 1977. After a two-year absence, he was re-elected in 1981 and has been serving District 1 ever since as a tireless advocate for New Hampshire’s sprawling North County. He said he will finish out his current term.

Republican U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte said she’s joined by people across New Hampshire in expressing her thanks for Burton’s decades of public service.

“Public service is a labor of love for Councilor Burton, who has established an unmatched record of achievement, and I am deeply saddened by his announcement,” Ayotte said in a statement. “No one has fought harder for his constituents than Ray, who has been a passionate and tireless voice for the North Country for decades – earning the admiration and gratitude of citizens across New Hampshire, Grafton County and Council District 1.”
