Letter: Four reasons to re-elect McClure in Ward 3
I am writing to support the re-election of Jan McClure for city council in Ward 3. While we are blessed to have three great candidates running in the same ward, McClure’s record makes her strongly deserving of re-election.
First, her work on the annual budgets has been exemplary. Her concern for the burden on taxpayers and her fair but thorough questioning of the budgets presented by the administration have helped keep spending at prudent levels. This was especially important as we weathered the recession.
Second, she has been a strong and reasonable voice for conservation efforts in the city. In fact, it is her involvement with conservation that has helped the city preserve important open spaces. At the same time, she understands that there is a balance between the sometimes conflicting goals of conservation and of the need for further tax base development. No other council member has that level of expertise on environmental and conservation matters.
Third, McCLure has done exemplary work with the library as the city juggles the many changes that libraries are undergoing, and she understands the many roles the library fulfills for all our citizens. Libraries are important for the sense of community they create and McClure understands this better than most.
Finally, McClure does an excellent job at responding to constituent concerns, whether it be about traffic speeds on Carter Hill Road, the emergence of new and deeper pot holes after the spring thaws or the hours of the pools. In short, she is responsive. That record of service is why McClure should be reelected.
