Letter: A true Halloween treat

Diane O’Callaghan’s “Terrific Halloween for kids of all sizes” (Monitor Forum, Nov. 2) prompted a poignant memory of a Halloween 35 years ago.

For my children I had sewn three zip-up jumpsuits with tails and hats with ears, made from leopard print flannel, planning to remove the tails and re-purpose them as pajamas. Soon the smallest one was outgrown. With no one to pass it down to, I gave it away and thought no more about it.

Two years later after most of the trick-or-treaters were gone, I heard a faint knock on my kitchen door. There stood a tiny child in a leopard suit, and it reminded me immediately of the ones I had made. I wondered why this little one was there all alone. Then a young woman poked her head around the door and asked me if I remembered it. She said she lived in Penacook and had come to show me her child. She said the suit had been passed around through several families along with my name. What a treat to see it that night – what a very special treat that this young mother had taken the time to make my day.
