Letter: Unfair to firefighters
Re “City firefighters’ forum should have been public” (Councilor J. Allen Bennett, Monitor Forum, Oct. 31):
I am not firefighter. I am a citizen. Like all of us, I depend on our public servants to be there at a moment’s notice to offer us protection during emergencies in which our very lives may be at stake. We depend on them for so many other things, not the least of which is educating our children is safety practices.
So the firefighters invited Bennett to a “closed” meeting on public safety, and he made that his platform? He went on to say that if roles were reversed they would share his argument for “lack of transparency.”
Is he serious? Transparency is reporting the outcome, not inviting everyone in. Are you telling me, Councilor, that you invite the public to every campaign meeting, every strategy meeting, etc.? In your four paragraphs you mentioned transparency four times, implying that firefighters are making shady back-door deals. You should be ashamed of yourself. It’s a good thing you were running unopposed, sir.
