Letter: Out of touch

Re “Cliches? No Way!” (Monitor letter, Dec. 17):

Boy, this Kool-Aid smells funny. Bill Bunker has done a tremendous job of demonstrating exactly why the Republican Party is done winning elections of consequence (certainly in this state) in its current form.

Every conservative will lecture you about individual choice, but only choices their rigid Christian worldview find palatable. Liberty is a good thing unless you want to marry the person you love, decide to abort a pregnancy, or are young and want to vote. Most everything else is okay, though. They’ll rail on about personal responsibility, but only for poor people, not stakeholders. The fact is, Republicans and their enablers are equally responsible for the bailouts and the subsidies and the nonsensical tax “breaks” to billionaires that contribute just as much to our devastating debt as the food stamps we send out to the dirty, unwashed masses.

Conservatism is an ideology, full stop. Not only that, it’s just as flawed and absurd as progressivism. The fact is that the GOP and its base are indeed out of touch and it’s not just by a little bit. Congressional candidate Marilinda Garcia has a unique opportunity to energize and empower a new generation of New Hampshirites, but she won’t do that by parroting the punch lines of the same tired, landed, bigoted and, most of all, old party officials.

Facts as always blow a hole in any liberals argument : 1) Gallup: Conservatives Outnumber Liberals in 47 Out of 50 States - February 1, 2013 2) Americans are more conservative than they have been in decades the liberal progressive democrats are only 20% of American culture and would be far less if it was not for the liberal main stream press being so far left they have created whole generations of low information democrat voters.

Sorry Nick, conservatism is simply a way of life. You are talking about crony Capitalism and looking to Solyndra and other green energy investments that Obama has backed, it is alive in well on the Democrat side. Moreover, conservatism is NOT about religion although many Christians identify themselves with conservatives. Conservatism is about moral, ethics and self responsibility. You seem to think that it is about the Chamber of Commerce or big business. Let me give you an example. It is just as nefarious for big businesses to want immigration reform (amnesty) so that employers can get cheap labor as it is nefarious for Democrats to want the same thing to bolster their ranks and steal elections. You have the right to love anyone you want, you don't need anyone's approval for that. Abortion? If you want one, have one, you are the person who later in life has to live with that choice. Just don't ask me to pay for your moment of bliss, in any way, shape or form. And to your last point, if people can get EBT cards, they ought to be able to get an ID, in fact it takes more to get an EBT card. Moreover, the inference that conservatives are "bigots" is non-sensical and pretty much empty rhetoric and hyperbole. One more point....about half of the billionaires are progressives, for example, Warren Buffett and George Soros, the Sandlers, etc. Conservatives believe that a rising tide raises all boats. That can only be accomplished if we have a thriving economy. That means that all people make more money and spend more money and fuel the economy. That takes less regulation and more private sector growth. That is what this conservative wants, I could care less about social view of the right or left. We all rise and fall together no matter what happens.
