Letter: Agriculture commissioner misses the point on GMOs

Re “GMO labeling won’t provide useful data” (Monitor Forum, Jan. 22):

New Hampshire Agriculture Commissioner Lorraine Merrill is completely missing the purpose of House Bill 660. The identification of genetically modified organisms in our food chains is the appropriate way to educate the consuming public. It is a basic right to know what is in your food and where it comes from. Whether you approve or disapprove, the technology is irrelevant to the mission of this legislation.

It is not Merrill’s job to negate a reasonable request from New Hampshire residents, who only would like their foods labeled honestly and openly.

The commissioner may have her opinions as to the pros and cons of GMOs, but they have no place in the public forum when it comes to supporting or not HB 660.
