Letter: The debate is the thing

We often forget the media’s responsibility to society is to report the news, not create it.

When the power of the media abuses our nation’s reality for political reasons the entire nation suffers and pays the price.

When the news media became the supermarket tabloid their credibility became lost forever.

The problem today is that liberals, moderates and conservatives focus more on the news-creating arguments than the actual importance of having the argument.

The disagreement of different political viewpoints represents the only true important factor in the rhetoric. Because we must never stop debating, never stop disagreeing, and never stop questioning because that is what makes humanity adaptive and complete.

When we stop arguing, when the rhetoric becomes one-sided, when any side is no longer willing to question, we achieve pure submission.

Regardless of your political beliefs, we must demand open access to all viewpoints and make up our own minds. However, viewpoint censorship can come from any direction. Even a place historically deemed neutral, the message is silent but deafening.

Such a place is a popular Southern New Hampshire gym where Fox News channel is not accessible on all five Life Fitness Ellipticals. Strange, all other media outlets are accessible with working sound, perhaps a sheer coincidence, dumb luck or a man-made political statement?

The moral of the story: Never stop debating, never stop disagreeing and never stop questioning because that is what makes humanity adaptive and complete.

This is a great letter. However, the writer surely must know that conservatives do want to debate, progressives just announce that "the debate is over", "the issue is settled", "its settled science", "studies prove", etc. Then if you are frak with them about an opinion you are branded a racist, misogynist, bigot, homophobe, xenophobe, etc. Progressives can't debate and they won't meet half way. Most newspapers, including this one are run by progressives and their slant spills over into the stories in a nefarious attempt to sway public opinion. Same for television media as well.

The media is suppose to be a Watch Dog and give us all the facts. If they did their job, we would not have to do long searches to find out facts that have no political bias. Hard to be informed when your sources of news, have stopped delivering the news, but instead have promoted their politics.

Speaking of media outlets . . . has anyone else noticed that, while CNN and MSNBC seem to be covering "Clippers-Gate" non-stop, 24/7 - their right-wing counterparts FOX News have not mentioned it at all? I've done quite a bit of channel surfing between 42-40 on my Comcast cable and I have not seen channel #41 mention Sterling once.

You mean CNN has moved off "Missing Malaysia Airliner" coverage? Perhaps this was the break they needed to change the subject.

LOL! Yeah they are the worst when it comes to "one trick pony" journalism.

The lame stream media is nothing more than a mouthpiece for the liberal wing of politics. They have long ago given up their rights to the protections for journalism that the constitution affords them.

"Regardless of your political beliefs, we must demand open access to all viewpoints and make up our own minds." Since when does a private company have any obligation to provide its customers with "all viewpoints?" Isn't the Right all about the rights of corporations do do whatever the hell they want?

Yes they do but if they wear their politics on their sleeve, people will not trade with them. I can name a dozen local businesses I will not trade with due to their overt politics.

A dozen? Seems like you would be much happier living in Texas or Mississippi anywhere down south.

Itsa, I agree with you. Apparently the letter writer doesn't share that point of view. Rather than simply taking his business elsewhere, he thinks this company ought to change its practices to suit his political inclinations.

This seemed like an interesting letter with a moderate viewpoint until the end. It seems someone is upset they can't get their Faux News while their are exercising. An hour away from any news seems like a good thing. But why write a letter, talk to the management.
