Letter: Slipping through the cracks
With the 1996 HIPAA laws requiring health-care information be kept confidential and the Patient Self-Determination Act that protects the right to accept or refuse medical treatments, many people with past histories of mental illness that date quite far back somehow slip right through those cracks of awareness, and many own or have access to firearms.
How will we ever be able to stop or control more senseless acts of violence? Somehow we must come together and at least try to put an end to the taking of life. We only have one, and each life is so valuable.
