Letter: Trust me, casino won’t lead to disaster
I was with Gov. John W. King when he signed the lottery bill 50 years ago – an act which has allocated millions of dollars to our schools. I recall the years when the Rockingham racetrack, liquor and tobacco produced most of the funding which enabled our state government to perform its vital services and cover the needs of our people. These activities and sales were regulated and monitored. No dire social disasters or crime waves ever occurred because of them. So it would be with the passage of the one-location casino bill recently approved by the state Senate and now awaiting action in the House. It will produce the dollars so desperately needed to fulfill the state government’s responsibilities and obligations to our people. I urge legislators to vote favorably for the one-location casino bill as supported by the governor.
