Letter: Many other sidewalks need improvements
Regarding proposed changes to the configuration of downtown Concord, I would prefer to see more money go to improving the safety of all city sidewalks, without focusing only on those on Main Street.
As an avid walker, I can cite examples from all over town of sidewalks in need of attention and repair. One striking example is the walkway along South State Street, from Pleasant to West Street, where unexpected dips and heaves abound. It is especially treacherous walking after sunset, as the streets themselves are inadequately lit. In rainy weather, you can suddenly find yourself stepping in deeply pooled water. Worse, in wintertime, hidden patches of ice can lead to slips, falls and serious injury.
Main Street is not the only street in town, and the sidewalks leading downtown need to be made safe and maintained for all of us who travel them.
