Letter: Barbecued bugs?

Whatever happened to the good old days when the worst things we had to fear on the 4th of July were traffic jams and wayward fireworks?

According to the Department of Agriculture’s Meat & Poultry Hotline, this year’s top threat is food poisoning by nasty e. coli and salmonella bugs lurking in hamburgers and hot dogs at millions of backyard barbecues. The hotline’s advice is to grill them longer and hotter. Of course, they don’t bother to mention that the high-temperature grilling that kills the bugs also forms lots of cancer-causing compounds.

Luckily, a bunch of enterprising U.S. food manufacturers and processors have met this challenge head-on by developing a great variety of healthful, delicious and convenient veggie burgers and soy dogs.

These delicious plant-based foods don’t harbor nasty pathogens or cancer-causing compounds. They don’t even carry cholesterol, saturated fats, drugs or pesticides. And they are waiting for us in the frozen food section of our supermarket.

This 4th of July offers a great opportunity to declare our independence from the meat industry and to share wholesome veggie burgers and soy dogs with our family and friends.

In response to this letter I am going to buy massive amounts of hamburgers and hot dogs and serve them up with pride for the America we once new before liberalism

There's no e coli in the venison I'll be grillin' this Independence Day. I aughta know - I killed it, gutted it, dragged it out of the woods, butchered it and packaged it myself! A damn sight tastier than any tofu pup I ever saw.

Carl, Time for a bite out of the old realty burger (loudly clearing throat)- Something has died for every meal you have ever eaten! Yes, plants are living things also. Opiate receptors (for pain/emotion chemicals) have been found in plants - why would nature put them there is they did not feel? As to pathogens like E-coli and the such - you can get these from sources other meat, e.g, surfaces, air (as in other humans). We are in a pitched battle with microorganisms from the day we are born and everyday there after. (they ultimately always win). If there is "wrongness" in this picture; , I think its in failing to respect the other plants and animals with whom we share the circle of life.
