Letter: Good news, bad news
I just received a notice from our town’s assessors that my property assessment has decreased about 10 percent. I suppose that is the good news.
The bad news is that assessments all over town have decreased about the same amount, which means that the tax rate for Boscawen will be increasing by at least the same percentage just to pay for the status quo, assuming that there are no increases in the town, county or school budgets in the fall. But what are the odds of that occurring?
I believe the town is doing well in keeping the budget under control, but I am not so sure of the county or the school district. I believe it is time for all of the residents in the five-town Merrimack Valley School District to start calling on their school board reps to level fund or even decrease the amounts needed for the next school budget, including any fiscal negotiations with the teachers.
As of now, with the assessments down, I anticipate a rate increase to the overall budget for Boscawen to be at least an additional $2.20 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. It will climb much higher if the school and county do not control their ambitions.
