Letter: Listening to each other’s voices
Re “Differences vs. unity” (Melissa May, Monitor letter, July 4):
What Melissa May fails to understand is that the intent of the Kids4Peace programming is not to “unify” the belief systems of the various faith communities as she suggests. Rather, exposure to other faith groups is simply intended to provide an opportunity to understand, appreciate and ultimately (hopefully) come to respect the diverse beliefs represented in our communities. By extension, an inter-faith dialogue is not intended to diminish a participant’s own beliefs or adherence to those same beliefs. At the end of the day, if we as individuals and as a society simply close our ears to each other’s voices, then all we hear is ourselves. How very sad.
Without respect and sensitivity for our respective differences, this type of insular reasoning and behavior will lead inevitably to the divisiveness and violence that so tragically fills the news each and every day.
