Letter: One-man rule
According to the latest poll 60 percent of Americans oppose U.S. military action in Syria, while only 25 percent support it. So what gives President Obama the right to initiate a new American war in the Middle East?
The power to start a war is awesome, the consequences impossible to foretell. That is why Congress – not the president – has the authority to declare war.
Such a momentous decision requires a full debate and a roll call in which each member of Congress is required to stand up and be counted.
The failure of our representatives to speak out makes it clear that Congress has abandoned its constitutional responsibilities. Is it perhaps time to stop pretending we’re governed by the Constitution and the rule of law and finally to acknowledge that America is now subject to one-man rule?
