Letter: Let’s care for, not ‘deal with,’ the homeless
Re “How best to deal with homelessness?” (Monitor Forum, Sept. 12):
I was struck by several things in this chart, including the headline, “How best to deal with homelessness?” And then, from other communities, suggestions ranging from making it illegal to dwell in a car, to banning sleeping in RVs and camping, to evicting and dissuading people from loitering.
Columbus, Ohio; Westchester County, N.Y.; Quincy, Mass., and Manchester should be commended for providing assistance and fund-raising for the homeless.
The chart might be better titled “How to care for the homeless.” The Concord area should aggressively seek a plan of action to “care” for the homeless that will help them become self-sufficient as much as possible. There will be successes and failures, but I believe it is our community’s responsibility to try. Any one of us could hit the bottom and need compassion and assistance.
