Letter: Bait and switch

Bait and switch: It’s a fraud as old as civilization itself and still active today.

Hydro-Quebec, a for-profit corporation based in Canada, is employing this scheme against the Granite State in its campaign to run a high-voltage power line through the heart of New Hampshire. The bait is that this is a much-needed line that will generate power for the Northeast and jobs for New Hampshire. The energy is inexpensive and clean, and the project will be built free of charge. Hurry, time is limited – this deal is just too good to pass up!

Now, the switch. We know the energy is not designed for our use and, besides, we already generate more energy then we need. The high-skill, short-term jobs created to build this monstrosity will not be filled by locals but rather by outsourced specialists. Given the impudence of Hydro-Quebec, it might be fair to assume that these positions have already been assigned. Once a precedent-setting direct current line has been established to Franklin, alternating current towers will be built across the state in every direction. Arrogance cannot be trusted. Hydro-Quebec, to the chagrin of many Canadians, is planning to flood more than 68,000 acres in order to create the dams needed to supply the line. This is a dollar-driven campaign that will feed money north, leaving our tourist-dependent state as nothing more than a conduit to the grid in Connecticut.
