Letter: Obama’s fault

The partial government shutdown is President Obama’s political theater intended to intimidate Republicans into ending their opposition to Obamacare, continued reckless spending, Obama’s job-killing policies and Obama’s appointment of radical left-wingers to key government positions.

Without media hype, most Americans wouldn’t notice the shutdown. To increase the pain and get attention, Obama spent more money to shut down things never closed before, such as open-air monuments like the World War II and Vietnam memorials, where he erected barriers and sent more guards to prevent access than normally there.

Republicans passed a bill to fund every part of government except for two minor Obamacare changes to which Democrats object. Republicans say big business shouldn’t get a one-year delay from Obamacare requirements unless individuals get a delay too. And Republicans don’t want highly paid (on average double the private sector) senators, congressmen and their staffs to get three-quarters of their health care premiums paid by taxpayers over and above any normal Obamacare subsidies.

Obama stated that these Republican changes wouldn’t stop Obamacare, so these aren’t the reason for the shutdown. There is a partial government shutdown because President Obama believes he can win a political victory and bludgeon Republicans into dropping opposition to anything he wants.

Mr. Ewing Republicans also say that big business should continue getting the huge tax breaks gifted to them during the Bush years, many are advocating they need more of these tax breaks today. Yet the Republicans apparently don't think average Americans need the same sort of breaks. Big business pays far less in taxes than they used to, and it's up to individual Americans to make up the revenue difference, tax burden folks like you blame on Obama instead of the administration which enacted these tax reforms. It's a double standard, a case of having the cake and eating it too. With a long history of such hypocracy already easily demonstrated in these other political debates it comes as no surprise the GOP stance on the ACA. Against it entirely, but unable to offer any credible alternative plan. I wonder what the spin is going to be after January 1, when all of these GOP predictions of doom turn out to be untrue?

The big elephant in the room in regards to facts is never discussed it seems. Here is what I see. Folks manipulate facts by using a time line. Example, Reagan robbed the SS funds will be a statement from a Lib. Correct he did rob SS funds. But where did that tradition originate? LBJ. He took the SS funds out of a trust fund and put that revenue in a general fund to pay for things like the War on Poverty, Viet Nam War etc. Most Presidents robbed SS Funds. No matter what the topic is, you can manipulate the facts by the time line you use, or just attack the opposing party's character. it is either deliberate manipulation or being uninformed. We see this with climate change because of where the time line starts. Sometimes what you leave out of the discussion manipulates your facts to defend your argument. That to me is dishonest. Media does it all the time. That is why we cannot get honest reporting from the media.

This is for Sail as the reply seems to be ghosted. Having read many of your posts through the years, I and many others here know that you have a tendency to put out "facts" that are outright distortions. If your going to put out things as facts and not as an opinion, please reference where you are getting your information from. Show me where the "lawlessness and bribes" came from. By the way, this whole ACA was based from the Conservative viewpoint until the President said it was a good idea, then all the conservatives ran from it (the party no no!) Most of these things in the Act were the conservative counter to what Billery, ( yes I have the utmost contempt for both Bill and Hilleary Clinton.) tried to pass in the 90's. All of this is public record.

To the low information liberals & democrat voters. When an item is in a thingy called "QUOTES" you can use your google thingy to find the source. I know it is the nature of democrats and liberals to have other people do their work for them but I am not an enabler and you will just have to go to the source and read the entire article to educate yourself

So in other words, we are to take your word (which many of us know are distortions of the truth that have been proven many times by cited sources). It is called validity of the facts. I'm surprised you don't like to prove where you get your info. Most others who post here at least give references as to where their information is taken from. Thanks for the laugh though

Completely wrong. If you want to be taken seriously - which I doubt - you will cite your sources so that your readers can make an informed judgement about the reliability of your quotes. Otherwise, you are simply attempting to insult our intelligence, something for which you are singularly unqualified.

Ouch! The truth hurt when that one landed. Nice zinger!

Here is the hypocrisy of it all when you talk about "facts". "The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. government can't pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. . . . Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that "the buck stops here." Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better"----Senator Barack Obama, 2006. Also: "I never drew a red line, the world drew a red line", "you can keep your doctor", etc. Facts that cause others to outright distort!

The post above is illustrative of the confused and short-sighted thinking besetting the right. "Raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure" but a small band of radicals shutting down the government, threatening default, playing roulette with the nation's and the world's economy, is leadership? And as for confused... is the government being shut down over Obamacare, or the debt limit, or something else entirely? This is a laundry list of complaints about issues for which Republicans--were they capable of honesty--would acknowledge their equal responsibility. But they'd rather destroy what they claim they're interested in saving. Did someone say 'leadership'?

There are no areas of open sea that are closed, diving buddies or not. There are however National Parks that are closed and that includes the Everglades National Park, but no open seas. If it sounds loony or delusional or vindictive or small-minded, that’s because when people only get handpicked bits and pieces of a story it seems that way. The problem is that when the House can't get their act together to avert a shutdown there is always collateral damage. So again - just because someone says something on the internet, doesn't make it true. No matter how many times they say it.

But if they put it in "quotes," doesn't that make it true?

Mr. Ewing, I have a bridge for sale, cheap. Doc

Mr. Ewing seems on track to me. Better keep that bridge.

After 40 plus votes to kill Obamacare and 40 plus failures, the GOP has seized on their latest brainchild - holding up funding the government. This is a matter of some hardline fanatics steering the GOP ship. You can blame the democrats and President Obama until you are red in the face. At the end of the day it does not take a Rhodes scholar to see what is going on. For all the attempted face saving whining about wanting to sit down and talk, you have to be able to do just that. The last GOP fueled shutdown didn't hurt Bill Clinton but the GOP itself. Can you not learn from history. Zealotry has no place in US politics.

The Congress holds the purse strings. They funded every single program except Obamacare. It was Obama that refused to accept that and forced the government shutdown. Like a child who wants the ultimate toy and the parents buy the next toy down from the ultimate toy. The child has a fit and doesn't want anything unless he can have it his way. Obama is a disgusting, petulant child who is playing Russian roulette with our economy and our health care system to feed his ego and his self centered agenda and legacy. Progressives know this but they just won't admit it because they like what he stands for and what he wants to do......dismantle and redefine our republic. Mauser, you don't think that zealot describes the Democrats? Look how they passed Obamacare and tell me that was not "zealotry".

This person writes almost word for word the talking points of the right wing media. This nation is turning into a country of seed pods who practically are in a trance parroting what they hear from Limburger and Hannity and the rest of the corporation owned right wing media. Americans used to be able to think for themselves now they look for others to do their thinking for them.

LOL...what are abc, nbc, cbs, cnn? Corporations right..This newspaper is owned by a corporation too. SO where do you get your talking points???

“There is really nothing complicated about the facts. The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted all the money required to keep all government activities going -- except for ObamaCare. This is not a matter of opinion. You can check the Congressional Record. As for the House of Representatives' right to grant or withhold money, that is not a matter of opinion either. You can check the Constitution of the United States. All spending bills must originate in the House of Representatives, which means that Congressmen there have a right to decide whether or not they want to spend money on a particular government activity. “ Facts always turns a liberals argument into ashes

The ACA is the law of the land. Quit griping and get on with it. No one here has ever disputed that all spending bills do originate from the House. That said, it takes compromise to hammer out spending differences from the Senate and the House. For the past 6 months the House has refused to put forth any funding bills what so ever until now. Why is that? This whole mess could have been avoided if the House would have done their job and not spend wasted time to vote to repeal or defund the ACA over 40 times. Here is the fallacy with your premise. The ACA was approved by both the House and the Senate, signed into law by the President and approved by the US Supreme Court. It is that simple. Those facts cannot be disputed. There are the true facts. I do thank you for the laugh though.

Don't forget that the second amendment protection of people to keep and bear arms as well as Citizens United are supported by the Supreme Court as well. Those facts cannot be disputed.

to gsec92 - Facts about the lawlessness and bribes in the passage of ObamaKare make any patriotic American cringe. Regardless, American Politics have a self righting mechanism that you are seeing in action today. Twenty years ago, when he was trying to persuade Bill and Hillary Clinton that universal health care was a politically unrealistic goal, the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan repeated one insistent warning: Sweeping, historic laws don’t pass barely. “They pass 70-to-30,’’ he said, “or they fail.” Four years ago, when he was trying to persuade Barack Obama that he would pay a terrible price for jamming health care reform through a reluctant Congress on a partisan vote, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel begged his boss to settle for a vastly scaled-down plan. We now know what happened: Obama’s bill made history — and caused all-out political war. For this president, that’s the price of doing business in a hyperpartisan culture

Wrong again. The GOP House would only approve the government funding in exchange for killing and or delaying an existing law. A law that has already been passed by congress and supported by a Supreme Court ruling. Spending on the ACA is already in-place. I am not sure what constitution that you are talking about, but no where does it give the House the right to black mail the nation for it's own partisan goal. 40 tries 40 failures. You left out the term "thingy" in your blather above BTW.

Straw man argument. No one ever challenged the notion that spending bills originate in the House. Maybe you can find some other "quote" that better suits your argument. Of course, you could simply make something up and put it in quotes, and then demand that your readers find the source.

Talking points? Writes word for word the talking points of the right wing media. As opposed to what? Parroting the talking points of the Left wing media which is every other source BUT Fox (fair and balanced) or supporting petitions on and believing what you read there? Oh, tillie, I think for myself and I don't worry about anyone thinking for me, the grave reality that progressives are decaying this country is so very obvious.

Mr. Ewing you should start being honest not only to yourself but to the readers of the letters to the editor. The American people want health care. The American people want health care reform. Obamacare is now the law. How much longer are we the people going to have to listen to you and your ilk complain, lie, whine and disrupt civil discourse? It passed. Deal with it. Do what you can to make it better. Nobody ever liked the little kid who said if we don't play my way I'm not playing. The only thing you could count on that kid doing is never being part of the solution. How many failed attempts at stopping this reform is going to be too many? Isn't it time to start focusing on the all too many issues that need to be addressed ? Can we get our people back to work? Can we get our children off drugs? Can we feed our children or teach them? Time to move forward, time to tell the Tea Party that Happy Days was in fact just a television show.

For the readers to determine the validity of Americans thirst for the democrats dysfunctional Big govt control of health care one should read the entire collection of polls going back years. they can be found here.

What about the poll released yesterday showing 70% of the country is blaming the GOP House for the crisis. I'll take your polls and raise you twenty of mine. Your bet..........

15% of Americans were not covered by health insurance and now the 85% who were are going to have to pay more so that 15% could be covered. Reform is fine but one thing we need to think about is how it is delivered....Obamacare will be more of a nightmare than what exists now. I would like to say that Citizens United is settled law so "deal with it" and the second amendment allows people to keep and bear arms so "deal with it". As far as the little kid saying "if you don't play my way then i'm not playing", well, that is what Obama does constant. Yes, yes, I know, you like him and you agree with him and you want everything to go your way. Remember, the Tea Party folks are equal in citizenship to you or the letter writer and many of them exceed you and me intellectually. They have as much right to express their world view as you do. I am not a Tea Party member but in a free society we need to beware of the opposition telling us to shut up, for those are the truly dangerous political members of our society.

Where are you pulling those "stats" from. I do hope is from a valid source and not a Faux news affiliate. You have proven many times that your "facts" are nothing but made up trash or outright distortions. I do appreciate the laugh though

Sail gets all his "facts" from his fishing buddies or else from some right wing news source. It probably all started in the early 90's when he first heard Rush Limberger and he has never heard or seen anything but right wing news since.

gsec92 and tillie........Rush Limberger? Pretty silly stuff. Faux news? yes you folks are so tolerant and diverse in your thinking. No bigotry on the left, no politics of personal destruction, nope. So inclusive of you to incorporate other points of view. You have your snyde and insidious remarks down pat. I am really floored.

"Obama tries to 'shut down' the ocean as part of temper tantrum"..... "Obama's latest directive with respect to the oceans. Yesterday, he ordered them “shut down.”That was the instruction conveyed to charter boat captains who depend on Florida’s Biscayne Bay for their livelihood. Reports that rangers with the National Park Service delivered the bad news that the bay was "closed" due to the partial government shutdown — that until government funding is restored, fishing boats are prohibited from taking anglers into 1,100 square-miles of open sea. If it sounds loony or delusional or vindictive or small-minded, that’s because Obama is". My scuba diving buddies in Coconut Grove confirmed this.
