Letter: Filled with distortions

Re “Liberals disgrace America” (Duene Cowan, Monitor letter, Oct. 12):

Anyone can have his own opinions, but this letter was filled with distortions. President and Michelle Obama and Jill Biden have been very involved in the plight of wounded veterans and their families. The Republican government shutdown is what caused the closing of the veterans’ memorials. The George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney chicken hawks had the bodies of our fallen troops return in the middle of the night in a cargo plane without even flags draping them and no family or honor guard meeting them. One of Obama’s first priorities was to change this policy and have our fallen heroes return home in honor.

Nothing in that letter was fact, and I don’t think it should have been printed.

This is for sail as the reply is ghosted. First and foremost, Just because a country busts UN resolutions (by the way Iraq was never part of the UN), does not give the US a right to invade. We had no valid reason what so ever to invade Iraq. Not only the so called WMD's were not found, but also Bush Jr's claim that Hussein was in league with Al-Qaida was also a lie. Anybody with a lick of sense knows that a culture 1000's of years old will never just give it up (see we will be hailed as liberators and shall bring Christianity to the unenlightened)! All we did was destabilize the region as Iraq was keeping Iran in check. Oh by the way where are all the so called oil proceeds we were supposed to get? And can you please tell me just what did we, as a country, gain from this invasion?

I agree gsec92. We cannot change the culture of a country that is steeped in religion. Waste of time and lives. But as far as terrorists go, that is a different debate. Especially about who is in cohoots with who supporting them. I do also believe that if Bush had not took the action he did, we might have been hit again. He does not get enough credit for keeping us safe, even when the left was doing everything in it's power to prevent him from doing so. They were against wire tapping, water boarding and even security checks at airports. When you consider that we were attacked by terrorists, something we had never experienced on American Soil, it is important to try and keep us safe. If we had been hit again, the Left would claim he did not do enough to protect us. That is not to say mistakes were not made. But I have yet to see a President that has not made mistakes. Except President Obama. Any mistakes he makes are blamed on Bush.

Ah but I am not talking about terrorists (Hussein killed all terrorists in his country and refused to ally with any, thus Iraq had NOTHING TO DO with 9/11). We did help create the influx of terrorists to Iraq once Hussein was deposed. So tell me since Al-Qaeda was based from Afghanistan, and OBL was in Afghanistan, why did we attack Iraq? Why not finish one front before starting another? If anything, we surely pissed off more people from Arabia so Al-Qaeda received more reinforcements than they normally would have. Bush Jr. and company made this mess. By the way gas prices are dropping like a rock falling from the sky. As you blamed Obama for the higher gas prices, should you now give him credit for their falling? Just saying here.

You can think what you want about Bush keeping us safe but by invading Iraq we lost any good will we had gained after 9/11. We gained the anger of the whole Muslim world and made terrorism our new way of life. Time for you to look at the libertarian wing of your party. They are the ones who are most against surveillance. Talking about mistakes, have you right wingers ever given Obama credit for of the foiled terror attacks, the death of Bin Laden, the capture and death of many of the Al Qaeda leaders? No you say he didn't do it, the military did it yet you all act like Bush planned and fought the Iraq War himself. Also the World Trade, and the Ok. bombing, and the Atlanta bombing were attacks on American soil, as Sail would say "facts' can't be changed though you guys try to do it all the time.

Van, many Democrats were taken in by the lies told by Bush/Chaney/Rice. Even Colin Powell was taken in by the lies and repeated them to the UN. Don't talk to me about history, it is much too recent for lies to forgotten yet, except by the right wingers here.

In 1998, 1999, and 2000????? Really???

It no longer amazes me that bumper sticker quality false rhetoric has made its way into the lexicon of the low information progressive democrat voter. The rise of this breed will be the death of the Republc

When Bush was president, the press took every opportunity to show as many casualties coming home and criticizing the Bush administration at every turn. When Bush was president, the Sunday pundit shows showed pictures of all of those soldiers killed weekly. Now? Since Obama has become president you would have to search pretty hard to find a video of casualties coming home to Delaware. Now? No more showing of those who sacrifice. That proves too things. The press was ginned up to show the evils of war at every turn under Bush but in typical progressive double standard, they are silent now. Obama is getting a free pass when in actuality the casualties under Obama in Afghanistan are far greater than under Bush.......it speaks to the irresponbility and lack of neutrality in reporting the news on the part of the press and it shows that progressives are willing to go along, absent of ethics or morals or sense of right and wrong. Stunningly it is all telling.

One question here Van. How many service people were killed in the decade before Bush II became president and how many were killed in the eight years he was president? Don't you think since he and his cronies were responsible maybe the least he could do was raise the death benefits? Maybe if the aftermath of the Iraq invasion had been planned better, Bush wouldn't have had to write so many letters to family members. Even though it was done secretly, I guess you heard about it somehow.

you mean war deaths or total military deaths??

It is a fact that more soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since Obama has been president than under Bush.

You certainly didn't address the distortions in the letter. As usual Tillie you use distortion. Lets us not forget that Congress (Both the House and Senate) including Hillary Clinton authorized Bush to go to war because of the death and destruction of 9/11/2001. So are we to blame FDR for all the deaths in WWII? I don't think so unless you want to distort things. Why did and does the military love Bush and Not Obama? Because Obama holds the military in contempt. Why did Bush immediately go to Fort Hood not worrying about if there were going to be cameras there or not. Why hasn't Fort Hood not been called a domestic terrorist attack and not Workplace Violence. The Obama administration is a disaster and America will need to undergo a lot of rebuilding after Obama leaves office.

Wait on minute there, Van. You write that Bush was "authorized to go to war because of the death and destruction of 9/11/2001." I am really beginning to lose my respect for you when you write something like that. That is not a distortion, that is an out right lie. Bush went to war at first supposedly to get Bin Laden "dead or alive." He and Chaney then went on their real purpose to Iraq because of the non existent weapons of mass destruction. They lied to Congress and they lied to the American people. I am not going to nik pick with you over your complaints with Obama when you start out not facing the truth about the Iraq War. The President who is trying to end these endless wars and bring our troops home, is the President who cares the most about our military. Finished with this subject.

"He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983." --Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Adviser, Feb, 18, 1998 "[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs." Letter to President Clinton, signed by: -- Democratic Senators Carl Levin, Tom Daschle, John Kerry, and others, Oct. 9, 1998 "Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process." -Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), Dec. 16, 1998 "We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country." -- Al Gore, Sept. 23, 2002 "We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." -- Sen. Ted Kennedy (D, MA), Sept. 27, 2002 .............shall I go on???

Tillie please find the time to do some research using some truthful sources to avoid making more False comments. Research will tell you exactly how many UN Sanctions were violated and the number of other Countries that were allied in the joint effort. Those facts turn to ashes the liberal's usual bumper sticker quality statements.

Sail, Tillie or any other usual suspect using truthful sources. That is expecting way too much of them. Here are some big name Democrats who voted for the war in Iraq: Hillary Clinton, Hartless Harry Reid, Joe no brain Biden, John I served in Vietnam Kerry. My guess is that Till didn't do well in history.

Van, we should never have gone into Iraq in the first place! The books were "Cooked" so Bush Jr. and company took us into a non-winnable unfunded war that took many lives and maimed thousands more. That is the Bush Jr legacy. The deaths of our service members fall squarely on their shoulders. We were brought into WWII with the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, by the Japanese. You are comparing apples to oranges here! We invaded a sovereign country on false pretenses (Iraq), VS going to war to defend from an invasion from a foreign country. And for your information, most people in the military loved Bush Sr. hated the Clintons, and had no love for Bush Jr. during his 2nd term when it was discovered he had lied to the people of the US about Iraq. Get your facts straight.

To gses92 - how many UN resolutions did Iraq violate - and how many nations joined the coalition ? The fact that those other countries had their own intelligence makes your post turn to ashes. I can safely bet that you wrongly believe that no WMDs were found in IRAQ. Do you even know the origin of the WMDs recently used in Syria?

Amen sir. It is ironic the chickenhawks like Van, who didn't have the guts to put on a uniform for our country - unlike you or me - and having the gall to tell others who have real courage what wars they consider what is "right."

I have to give credit to those who put their name to a letter to the editor but I have to be very critical of this letter. During the before the Bush administration the death benefits for a person killed in services was barely enough to pay for their funeral. That was unacceptable to Bush and it is dramatically higher today because of President Bush. This letter is filled with distortions. I went to Snopes.com and the false claim of “fallen troops return in the middle of the night in a cargo plane without even flags draping them and no family or honor guard meeting them.” The policy that Patty was most likely referring to was the privacy policy that no pictures of flagged draped coffins could be taken which is a policy that Obama reversed as soon as he took office. Because Obama was a democrat the press wasn’t interested in taking those pictures anymore and they also stopped their ghoulish act of promoting the death count. It was the Obama administration that narrowly interpreted the bill to restore military pay that was passed by the Republican House and then passed in the senate before Obama Signed it. It is abundantly clear the contempt that Obama has for the military and a far cry from the Love and appreciation that Bush gave our servicemen whether or not it was in front of camera.

Van, you really need to be serious here. I served in the USN over 20 years and I am a retired disabled war vet. You have no reason to talk about things that you have no knowledge of. The military death benefit when I served was 100,000 dollars with a proviso if the service member dies in combat, it went to 200,000. That was in 1998 when I retired. The president does NOT have any authority to change this, Congress does. Bush Jr and company not only had our valiant war dead be brought in to the country under the cover of darkness, with no ceremony, but also required the military pay authorities refuse payment of all monies earned while in service if they were killed before the 15th of the month! Plus if the service member who died somehow in the fog of war lose their weapon and it not be found, the costs were deducted from any final pays owed the deceased service member's family.

Well, Van how are you going to spin this.

I find it very hard to believe that if President Bush stopped payment of our fallen soldiers if they were killed before the 15th of the month. I would think that would have been jumped on by the Bush haters big time. Not saying it did not happen, but everybody hated Bush and I am sure they would have loved to make that public. We had someone on here also state the caskets had no flag also. But the few photo's I saw released recently showed all the caskets had flags and a soldier guarding those caskets on the plane. Seems to be some conflicting stories here. Bush met with the families privately. That was his style, and most times visited the hospitals without press.

Mauser, see the attached links: http://www.sptimes.com/2005/01/31/Worldandnation/Bush_will_propose_100.shtml http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-500257_162-670675.html http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/washington/2005-02-01-death-benefits_x.htm Two of my sources are liberal. Liberals lie Conservatives tell the truth.

GSE, thank-you for your service but I take issue with your arrogance. Here is evidence that I am correct and you are wrong: http://www.sptimes.com/2005/01/31/Worldandnation/Bush_will_propose_100.shtml

Again your talking apples to oranges. The death gratuity is an immediate payment to the family of a deceased military member (which Bush Jr did request be increased). The death benefit is the SLGI life insurance which is the life insurance for the military member when a service member dies. Should they die in combat, the death benefit paid doubles. Your referring to the death gratuity and NOT the death benefit. Thus my information is correct and again please if you really do not know what your talking about, please refrain from quoting improper facts.

Amen sir. What is the real "arrogance" here is chickenhawks like Van and the other usual suspects here who cowardly let other do the fighting for our country feel they have the right to lecture us veterans on points of military protocol and the proper way to honor our dead.

I take it Nashua Mike you know who has served in the military on this forum? Or is it just the folks who disagree with you that you assume did not serve?
