Hot Topic: Slavery? Re-educating women? Give us a break!

Our feature on the Thursday Forum page about Dr. Ben Carson, winner of last weekend’s New Hampshire Young Republicans 2016 presidential straw poll, drew some angry reaction. Here’s a sampling:

Beyond the pale

As a public service to its readers who may be eating breakfast while reading, I think it behooves the Monitor to provide a “Choking Alert” message when printing such outrages as Ben Carson’s claim, “Obamacare is really, I think, the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery. It is slavery, in a way, because it is making all of us subservient to the government” (“Who in the world is Ben Carson?” Monitor Forum, Oct. 24).

It was bad enough when former New Hampshire House speaker Bill O’Brien compared Obamacare to the Fugitive Slave Act, but from an African-American man, who is not only a doctor but one whose parents were from rural Georgia and likely descendants of slaves, is beyond the pale.

As a 70-year-old white woman from New Orleans, I know how difficult survival was for African-Americans back in the day, particularly those whose only employment opportunities lay in service to wealthy white families who still yearn for the “Glories of the Old South,” and the personal compromises they had to make. And it is not my place to bandy the term “Uncle Tom” about lightly, if at all. However, Carson’s analogy smacks of nothing less. How dare he!

Now I am really off my feed.

No need to re-educate me, Dr. Carson!

Re “Who in the world is Ben Carson?” (Monitor Forum, Oct. 24):

Ben Carson, really? I’m pretty sure at 62 years old I don’t need to be “re-educated” on being “defenders of babies.”

Perhaps if he walked a quarter-mile in my shoes as a midwife and high-risk OB nurse for the past 38 years or any woman’s shoes who has had to make painful or joyful decisions around childbirth, he would not be so patronizing.

Young Republican women, older Republican woman! Do you really want this man making choices and decisions about your body?!

Please think it over. Reread Ben Carson’s answers about women’s health care.

You should be “riled up” about anyone making a decision about your health care, particularly those who would deny you through laws the health care you are entitled to.

The Monitor's story on Ben Carson was clearly an attempt to "Alinsky" and Demonize Ben Carson. Just look at the racist (Liberal's definition ) comments attacking Carson. Ben Carson is the UnObama. He is real speaks the truth as a Doctor and not a Community Organizer has real life knowledge on the health care system works and how to best improve it.

Obama...he's no brain surgeon. Its obvious.

the democrats demonize and destroy brand of politics is a cancer on America

But calling Obamacare "the worst thing to happen in this nation since slavery" isn't demonizing, but is rational and temperate? Seriously?

If you see those critical comments as racist, you need to explain yourself--your playing the race card here is exactly what conservatives say defenders of Obama do--claim that almost any criticism of a black politician is by definition racist. Re: " best to improve it." Carson is one doctor, and because you agree with him, he must be right. So then, the 59% of doctors who support some form of single-payer option must therefore be wrong in their "knowledge of the healthcare system and how best to improve it."

My oh my . . . how an African American man who doesn't have a "D" after his name can get the left's panties in a bunch. LOL!!!!

Referencing Ben Carson’s points: on health care he said Everything else pales into insignificance compared to your health, yet he did not want to make it available to all; on ObamaCare he said your health should be controlled by you and not by the government; On Abortion he implies the government should control you and tell you what to do; his reference to the phrase “war on women” reminds me of Mitt Romney’s comments showing this person too is out of touch with the average working woman. This Carson guy is a walking contradiction.
