Letter: Misguided on climate change

Monitor editors made several misguided observations in the editorial “Everybody has a church in the woods” (Monitor, July 1).

Climate change is no longer a “philosophical” debate; it is a scientific one. They argue that it is “simply not true” that the same things are at stake for everybody in this debate.

We are all impacted by extreme weather events, whether they occur in California, Florida or Manhattan Island.

If we wait until everyone learns to “reconnect in their own way with the landscape,” Manhattan subways will be under water, coastal wetlands and barrier islands will have disappeared, dead zones where fish cannot survive will proliferate . . . and forget swimming in Webster Lake (Monitor, July 1).

If it's true mankind is a goner, because he waited far too long to save the planet.

The term 'climate change' is a term that the 'main stream media' has adopted to allow its treatment of 'anthropogenic global warming' (AGW) to be less provoking to those who rail against the thought of global warming. Those 'against' AGW are collectively known as the 'deniosphere'. I find it hilarious that although about 97% of the peer-reviewed scientific reports related to the world climate (including the recent IPCC report) predict that increased global temperatures will result in melting world glaciers, rising sea level, and average local temperatures increasing uncomfortably, the deniosphere will brag that its 3% scientists (deniers) are right and that AGW is a hoax. Which group of scientists would you have most faith in??

Only a LIDV would repeat the massively disproven " 97% of the peer-reviewed scientific reports

ROTFLMAO !

What is so wrong with being efficient with energy any way?? It costs less. It pollutes less. It harms less. These are good things. Sometimes I just want to say who cares about the science? I want to act on climate because it is a good thing to do.

Precisely right, I couldn't agree more. Climate certainly does change in any case. Even if Global Warming particularly is somehow proven false I will certainly continue to support alternative energy, particularly solar, a great problem for physics. Wind power maybe, maybe not. Jury still out on several kinds of issues.

The biggest problem with climate change, is we change the name every few years. Global Warming, that leads to an ice age type scenario, now we are talking climate change. When you talk global warming and people see a cold winter or cooler summer, people immediately dismiss it. Climate change has very little to do with air temperature as a cause. The driving factor is the ocean temperatures not the air. Those are the critical numbers. As the oceans warm, sea ice, glaciers, ice shelf's all melt and release millions of gallons of fresh water into the oceans. As the oceans and the salinity changes the currents get out of wack. These currents are what moderate global temperatures. Without the moderating effects most of the US and Europe would more resemble northern Canada. It even starts making no sense to me. Until we can educate peoples what the real problems are, there is little wonder that people are confused.

When the scientific community is virtually unanimous on a subject, you would think educating people to be a piece of cake. However, when you have limitless money committed to the status quo and media allies who are determined to shout down the scientists education gets overwhelmed by the propaganda. Remember that saying about how far a lie can travel before the truth gets its shoes on.

97% of Republicans agree that climate change is happening. 97% also agree that the steps that progressives want to take are economy killers and will worsen things in this country. The science is NOT settled and the debate is NOT over.

truth spreading just this week...... HEADLINES: 1) Climate Change ‘Experts’ Didn’t See This Coming: Rising Water Levels In The Great Lakes 2)Antarctica sets new record for sea ice area 3)Telegraph: The Scandal of Fiddled Global Warming Data 4) Washington Times: Rigged ‘science’ 5) • RealClearPolitics: Climate Change: Who are the real deniers? 6) Zurich Insurance Group is closing its U.S. climate change office six years after opening it ( that one proves Brucie wrong again ) 7) NOAA Reinstates July 1936 As The Hottest Month On Record ( that one proves Walter wrong again) 8) The disagreement over what defines ‘endorsment of AGW’ by Cook et al. is revealed in raters remarks, and it sure isn’t a 97% consensus ( that one is for tillie) 9) The Washington Post verifies ‘the pause’ in global warming... and that is just the last few days Headlines folks

There's too much misinformation here to deal with at one time, so let's pick one false "fact": NOAA lists July, 1936, as the hottest month on record in the United States. Their statement makes no claims about the climate worldwide, but that doesn't stop BestPres from trotting it out as evidence(?). More later, maybe. It's tiring having to refute partial truths.

Silly boy..... NOAA had to change it back cuz they fudged it and got caught by real scientists - dont let that stop your pushing the HOAX

I have already debunked your Antarctica sea ice story for what it was. How soon you re-ignore facts.

BPR makes reference to valid stories and valid points. Can any of the PHD armchair climatologists here comment. If you do not have a climatology degree and just learn what you do by reading sites that agree with you and your ideology, please don't answer that question. Oh, sorry, I guess no takers.

When Carson can't debate facts she just makes stuff

One month the 'warmest on record'?? ROTFLMAO... How about you go find when the warmest YEARS were. Hint: check it out here (look at the table): http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/global/2013/13

Walter...can you explain just how July '36 went from not being the hottest to being the hottest??? Or, more correctly, from the hottest month, to not being the hottest, then back to being the hottest?? How does that work, exactly?

It is simple: the grammar school dropouts find cherry pick an article that suits their needs, write down the magazine and date, then find a second, and a third, so whenever somebody points out the error of the first, they spring the second, with that debunked, they spring the third. Who cares which 'month' is the hottest?? It the total yearly temperature that NOAA/NCDC report and from which AGW is determined!!

that was an answer??? That was 100% twaddle...try again

Poor Poor Walter - data that blows your stuff out to space appears daily. HEADLINES: "Government Data Show U.S. in Decade-Long Cooling" Responding to widespread criticism that its temperature station readings were corrupted by poor siting issues and suspect adjustments, NOAA established a network of 114 pristinely sited temperature stations spread out fairly uniformly throughout the United States. Because the network, known as the U.S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN), is so uniformly and pristinely situated, the temperature data require no adjustments ...... According to the USCRN temperature readings, U.S. temperatures are not rising at all – at least not since the network became operational 10 years ago. Instead, the United States has cooled by approximately 0.4 degrees Celsius, which is more than half of the claimed global warming of the twentieth century.

Poor poor PBR...you got to any anti-AGW website you can find to get some useless statements, then post them as if they actually made sense. Then you flit to another anti-AGW website for more meaningless crap. When will you grow up and try to learn something.

take it up with Forbes...http://www.forbes.com/sites/jamestaylor/2014/06/25/government-data-show-u-s-in-decade-long-cooling/

The sky is Falling - they sky is falling

The oceans are rising! The oceans are rising!

Another False declaration from Tillie

Just sit back and count all the money from your investments in the fossil fuel industries.

tillie, the rhetoric is continuing! the rhetoric is continuing!
