Letter: Insensitive headline
I found the headline on the item about NBA veteran Jason Collins’s coming out as a gay man, “Coming clean,” (Monitor Sports page, April 30) to be offensive and insensitive.
The phrase “coming clean” implies someone is hiding something or doing something inappropriate and has decided to finally tell the truth about a lie or secret the public deserves to know. Collins owes us no information about his sexual orientation!
The way he chose to describe his decision to make this public highlights not only his courage but the integrity of thought that he gave to it. The Monitor’s headline makes it seem somehow ugly and disparages the enormity of his being the first active professional athlete to have the bravery to in his words “start the conversation.” You owe him an apology.
