Van, you're at least 50 years behind the times with your "facts". Which is not a good thing for someone who routinely complains about 'low information voters'. Those who supported the KKK, Jim Crow laws, and Bull Connor-like treatment of civil rights marchers, long ago migrated to the Republican Party. Former Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond's behavior exemplifies the transition, as he switched parties and became a Republican for the last 20 years of his sorry career in politics. Following the passage of landmark civil rights legislation in 1964-1965, all proposed by LBJ, the South, as LBJ predicted, was lost to the Democrats for a generation (it's now going on two). Which party is working hard to gut the heart out of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965?--the Republicans. Which successful presidential candidate chose to start off his campaign with a dog-whistle appeal to segregationists/ states-righters at a fair in Mississippi some 30+ years ago? For better or worse, if not for white voters in the South, the Republican party would likely claim permanent minority status.
