Political experience: Elected to Congress in 1976; Served until 1984, when he ran unsuccessfully for a U.S. Senate seat; won the Libertarian Party's 1988 presidential nomination; re-elected to Congress in 1996; ran for president as a Republican in 2008.
Brief bio: Paul is a longtime member of Congress who, according to his website, "never votes for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution." As a physician, Paul served as a flight surgeon in the Air Force and later worked as an OB/GYN in Texas. He and his wife, Carol, have five children and 17 grandchildren.
