River rescue

Fire Lt. Bobby Silvestriadis reaches out to a 21-year-old Concord woman who became stranded on a rock in the Merrimack River downstream from the Sewalls Falls Bridge after a pool raft she was riding deflated Wednesday, June 30, 2010. The woman, who declined to give her name, was traveling with two friends, also 21, on $5 rafts, she said. Three Concord firefighters reached her about 1:20 p.m.. The woman “really wasn’t prepared for what she was doing,” said fire Battalion Chief Bill Weinhold. “It’s unfortunate that people put themselves in a position where we have to come and get them and tie up resources.”

I am glad the woman was saved, but dismayed by the lack of common sense and intelligence this woman did not have. Just look at the equipment and attire this woman used in a very rapid and rocky water environment. She put the responsibility of her life and rescue on the State, where as personal responsibility could have prevented a potential tragedy. I just hope we don't hear about this woman again come October, when we read that she attempted to hike TuckerMan's Ravine at 2:00PM in shorts and sandals.People now a days lack personal responsibility and are always looking towards Government to bail them out. She is very fortunate that the Government was there to save her this time, but what about the next time?I think it is time for all of us to practice common sense and personal responsibility, for the State will not always be there for us.A prime example of the coming Nanny State mentality!

You have got to be kidding me!? So what...if you're house catches fire you should have to pay them to come put it out?! Wow...keep those dumb ideas to yourself.

Sorry but .... that's what NH Fish & Game has proposed for rescues in the White Mountains ...  even for experienced hikers/climbers who must be rescued.  These things cost more than most can imagine, and put the lives and well-being of rescue personnel on the line.As far as "if your house catches fire".  Come ON! .... that comparison is like if someone stupidly built a fire in the middle of their living room!!!

Of course it's unfortunate people do these sorts or things, but they always will, and it is YOUR job to rescue these people. This is one of the reasons we have you and *our* resources...
It's one thing to try and educate people about doing things like this. It's another to complain... Think of it as 'good training'.
I'm guessing that girl's mom is happy you responded.

Sorry, "21-year-old Concord woman". Same as some of the rescues that are carried out in the White Mountains. There will always be those who will do something idiotic. These people should be obligated to PAY for being rescued, rescue personnel putting themselves at risk! The Merrimack River, in many places, is certainly NOT where you would casually toss in a $5 POOL float. BobNH, I agree! Take some responsibility for your actions! Next we'll hear she didn't know how to SWIM!
On the other hand ... embarrassment is a good teacher. That kid Nelson from "The Simpsons" comes to mind ...
HA HA!!!!

Hey Bob,Dunno if you've ever been to Sewells falls, but they are named that for a reason.  It can be very rough waters and lots of rocks.  Looks like she did the safe thing, thankfully she didn't try to swim and drown.  And hey, Nice Leap!  But I'm sure she won't make that mistake again...

You can practically walk across the river right there.  How much for a new prop for that out board?

So you're floating down the Merrimack River on a sunny, summer day in July, in your bathing suit, and your float gets stuck on a rock so you call the fire dept to rescue you?! Jump off the rock, let the current take you, and freakin' swim to shore!!!
