Seeing Regina

Regina Neal, a Concord third-grader adapts to life with a rare vision disease thanks to the love of her family and support from her teachers at Rumford Elementary School.

Regina Neal
Regina Neal, who is 8-years-old, watches iCarly at her house in Concord on Monday, Sept. 27, 2010. Neal has a rare genetic disorder called Aniridia, where she was born without the irises in her eyes. Her biological father also has Aniridia, and lost his eyesight altogether at age 17. Aniridia is a genetic disorder, and there is a 50-50 chance that if one parent has Aniridia, so will a child of that parent. She is considered legally blind, and can see about 6 inches away, but beyond that her vision is blurry and distorted. Along with Aniridia, Regina also has childhood glaucoma, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, a form of cerebral palsy, and nystagmus where her eyes involuntarily move back and forth.Purchase photo reprints at PhotoExtra »
