Intown Concord’s Midnight Merriment, an annual event that kicks off the Christmas season for the city’s downtown businesses, was held last night.

This is the right headline - it was all about shopping, not a community gathering. By not closing off the streets, the sidewalks were crowded and there was not the sense of community that there was in the past with the street closed and the vendors and music outside. Apparently a few businesses wanted the streets open to increase sales. It's ironic that they think wider sidewalks will increase profits, but don't get that you have to attract the people downtown in the first place.
