The annual Laconia World Championship Sled Dog Derby kicked off yesterday on the shores of Lake Opechee. The derby, which was first run in 1929, continues through tomorrow and has drawn racers from New England, Quebec and Wisconsin. The races were twice postponed this year due to snow conditions and were cancelled entirely last year. “I was a little worried this morning, but we’re good!” Jim Lyman, president of the Lakes Region Sled Dog Club, told the Associated Press yesterday afternoon. According to race organizers, the title of “World Championship” was used in 1936 and has not been used with any other dogsled race since. The teams are competing for more than $20,000 in prize money, according to the AP.
