Monarchs’ Jones shuts down IceCaps in a shootout

Manchester Monarchs goalie Martin Jones stopped all four St. John’s snipers he faced to secure a 4-3 shootout victory yesterday over the IceCaps. Jones finished with 40 saves.

Nick Shore and Jordan Weal beat IceCaps goalie Michael Hutchinson in the shootout for Manchester (34-14-2-5), which leads the Atlantic Division with 75 points. St. John’s (28-19-1-3) is 15 points behind in third.

Steve Quailer’s second goal of the season gave Manchester a 1-0 lead at 5:24 of the second period. The IceCaps tied the game less than two minutes later, then went ahead at 14:16 of the middle frame. Manchester came back to tie it on a Nick Deslauriers goal with 2.1 seconds to go in the period.

St. John’s went ahead once more just 1:35 into the third, but Deslauriers’s second goal of the night made it 3-3 and eventually forced overtime.
