Concord’s Amber Ferriera wins Ironman triathlon in Lake Placid
Concord’s Amber Ferreira ran a career-best Ironman marathon to hold off the top competitors and win the Ironman Lake Placid triathlon in New York on Sunday.
It was the first career Ironman title for Ferreira, who is attempting to qualify for the prestigious Ironman in Kona, Hawaii, which is held annually in October.
Ferreira was third after the 2.4-mile swim portion of the race, then jumped into the lead early in the 112-mile bike portion. She then extended her lead in the marathon to beat runner-up Kim Schwabenbauer by just over seven minutes. Ferreira’s times were 57:13 in the swim, 5:19:33 in the bike and 3:08.35 in the marathon for an overall time of 9:31:28. Schwabenbauer finished in 9:38:14.
