Browns’ Manziel fined $12,000 by league for middle finger flip

The NFL fined Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel $12,000 yesterday for flipping his middle finger at Washington’s sideline, a person familiar with the penalty told the Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the ruling has not been made public.

Manziel said he was reacting to incessant taunting by the Redskins during Monday night’s nationally televised game when he made the gesture while running back to Cleveland’s huddle.

Manziel has never shied away from other gestures on the field, notably the finger-rubbing “money” sign he made famous while winning the Heisman Trophy at Texas A&M.

Marijuana charges against Steelers RBs Bell, Blount

PITTSBURGH – The police filed marijuana possession charges against Pittsburgh Steelers running backs Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount following a traffic stop.

The police in the Pittsburgh suburb of Ross Township said a motorcycle officer pulled over Bell’s Chevrolet Camaro when he smelled marijuana coming from it around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Detective Brian Kohlhepp has said the players and a woman in the car, 21-year-old Mercedes Dollson, of Elk Grove, Calif., were polite and cooperative.

Kohlhepp said all three acknowledge the three-quarter-ounces of marijuana found in the car belonged to them.

Online court records show all three have been charged with marijuana possession. Bell is also charged with driving under the influence because, in Pennsylvania, driving while using any amount of an illegal drug is a crime.

State trooper who arrested Bengals’ Montgomery fired

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina state trooper who arrested NFL defensive lineman Sam Montgomery at a traffic stop last June was fired.

The state Department of Public Safety said yesterday that Lance Cpl. R.S. Salter was terminated for violating agency policies including conduct unbecoming a state employee. Salter stopped Montgomery in June when the Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman was returning to his Greenwood home.

Montgomery was arrested and spent a night in jail after Salter clocked him going 89 mph in a 55 mph zone. But the trooper’s dashboard camera also captured the officer threatening to use a Taser because the 6-foot-3, 262-pound lineman was struggling to understand his commands.

The agency said Salter’s interaction with Montgomery was inconsistent with how troopers are trained to conduct themselves during such traffic stops.

Colts coach announces infant daughter of DT Hughes dies

INDIANAPOLIS – Colts Coach Chuck Pagano said defensive tackle Montori Hughes had not been at practice recently because his infant daughter died from a sudden illness last week.

Maveah Alice Hughes was 3 months old. Pagano did not provide many details about what happened but did offer condolences to Hughes and the baby’s mother, Leigh Burton.

Pagano did not say when Hughes is expected to return to the team or whether he would play in today’s preseason game against New Orleans.

Chiefs OT Stephenson suspended for PED violation

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Chiefs offensive tackle Donald Stephenson was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the regular season for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Stephenson was a fill-in starter last season but was expected to anchor the right side of the line this year. He remains eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games, including Saturday night’s game against Minnesota.

Reports: Machado to have season-ending knee surgery

CHICAGO – Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado will soon have season-ending surgery on his injured right knee, according to multiple reports.

Yahoo! Sports first reported yesterday that the 22-year-old All-Star was done for the year.

The Orioles began the day with a nine-game lead in the AL East, the biggest division margin in baseball.

Machado is hitting .278 with 12 homers and 32 RBI in 82 games.

Scott, Tringale tied for the lead at Barclays; McIlroy still alive

PARAMUS, N.J. – Now that the majors are over, Adam Scott is going after the one big prize remaining this year – a shot at the $10 million FedEx Cup prize.

Scott ran off four straight birdies in the middle of his round and finished with a tap-in birdie yesterday for a 6-under 65 to share the 36-hole lead with Cameron Tringale at The Barclays.

Scott is the defending champion at the first FedEx Cup playoff event. He won last year at Liberty National.

British Open and PGA champion Rory McIlroy was nine shots better than his opening round, playing bogey-free for a 65.

Not only did he make the cut, McIlroy suddenly is only five shots behind going into the weekend.

SPRINT CUP

NASCAR moves Bristol spring race to mid-April

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Bristol Motor Speedway is getting its wish – a later race date in the spring.

NASCAR said the schedules for all three top series will be announced on Tuesday night, but the sport’s governing body did share the news about a new date at the track hosting this weekend’s races. BMS will host a NASCAR weekend next April 17-19, instead of mid-March like this year.

Rain has often been an issue in mid-March at Bristol, and this year’s Sprint Cup race day was marred by rain delays that added up to more than five hours. Racing finished under the lights in frigid weather.

Kvitova, Rybarikova win in Connecticut Open semis

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova moved into the finals of the Connecticut Open for the third straight year, beating Australian Samantha Stosur, 6-3, 6-1, yesterday.

The Czech star served 11 aces, nine in the first set. She broke Stosur’s serve to take an early 3-1 lead, and did not face much of a challenge on her own serve, facing just four break points.

Kvitova won the tournament in 2012 and lost to Simona Halep in last year’s final.

She will face a close friend, Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia, who beat Camila Giorgi of Italy, 6-2, 6-4, in the first semifinal yesterday.
