Fisher Cats fall short in series opener against Portland

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats stranded the potential game-tying run at third base in both the seventh and ninth innings last night and dropped the opener of a series against the Portland Sea Dogs, 4-3.

K.C. Hobson (2-for-3, RBI) and Jorge Flores (2-for-4, RBI) led the Fisher Cats offense, and Casey Lawrence allowed six hits and four runs in six innings to suffer the loss.

Portland’s Keith Crouch improved to 8-1, pitching seven innings and allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out five. Stefan Welch went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI to lead the Sea Dogs offense.

The series continues tonight at 7:05, with right-hander Austin Bibens-Dirkx (6-2, 2.18) starting for the Fisher Cats against Portland lefty Brian Johnson (9-2, 1.87).
