The two men work with the Concord Parks and Recreation Department. Wright is usually the one to build the fire but had knee surgery this month so his duties were limited to stoking the logs with a charred hockey stick. "I learned that being keeper of the fire is the best job," said Wheeler, who took over Wright's responsibilities for this year.

After digging out her father's Russian hat from a box to prepare for the weather, Morris came out with Colin Wilkins to watch a work colleague play in the game.

The Proluxs cheer from the sidelines and occasionally from near the bonfire.

Slack grew up just around the corner from the park and went to Concord high school but now lives in Bradford. This was Allura's first time at the tournament and she brought her friend Corrinne Croto, 9, right.

T his year’s 1883 Black Ice Pond Hockey Championship came at the end of an exceptionally cold week at Concord. The bonfire lit in the late afternoon became a place to warm up and catch up.
