High school girls’ indoor track Athlete of the Season

Elisabeth Danis

Coe-Brown girls’ indoor track

The freshman was runner-up in both the 1,500-meter run (5:03.36) and the 3,000 (10:44.35) to lead the Bears to the Division II team championship.

Q: Which was a more challenging race for you at the D-II meet, the 1,500 or 3,000?

A: The 3,000 was definitely a more challenging race for me. I actually liked that it was a longer race, but it was the race I had more time to think about and I was more intently focused on. Before the 1,500, I didn’t really have enough time to consider how the race is going to turn out, I just had to run.

Q: Describe your indoor season in one word.

A: My indoor season in one word would be “exciting.” It was just great to be racing with the team and to go after the championship.

Q: Who was the unsung hero of your team?

A: The unsung hero of our team would have to be senior Katelyn Terry. Not only is she one of the oldest and most experienced members of the team, but she ran in our 4x4 and 4x200 relays, along with the 1,000. She’s such a solid runner. During our cross country season, she was the same solid runner, and I feel like we can always count on her to be there and give her best to the team.

Q: How much did running cross country in the fall prepare you for the indoor season?

A: Running in the fall really prepared me for the indoor season. Not only was I in better shape than I had been, but I was comfortable with the entire coaching staff and I gained experience racing in general.

Q: Do you prefer running indoors or outdoors?

A: I prefer running outdoors. I love being outside, and there’s so much more space. I really like running in the rain and snow, too; it’s especially fun.

Q: What’s your favorite indoor track to run on?

A: I love running on the UNH indoor track. It’s shorter, which could make the races feel longer, but I can actually sprint a lap there, which isn’t something I can do at other tracks.

Q: How would you improve indoor track in New Hampshire?

A: I’m not really sure how I would improve indoor track in New Hampshire. I think competing with more schools across the state would be fun.

Q: Do you have a favorite brand of running shoes?

A: Nike is my favorite brand of running shoes. Specifically, the Nike Pegasus. I’m on my third pair right now.

Q: If you weren’t running in the winter, what would you be doing?

A: If I wasn’t running in the winter I would be playing basketball. That’s one of my favorite sports.

Q: What other sport do you wish you were good at?

A: I’d want to be good at ballet, or dancing in general. Dancing is such a pretty sport, it’s really interesting to watch.

Q: If you could go to any sporting event what would it be?

A: If I could go to any sporting event I’d want to go see a Baylor versus UConn women’s basketball game.

Q: What was the last sporting event you paid to go see?

A: The last sporting event I paid to see was the Coe-Brown vs. Pembroke basketball game at UNH.

Q: If you could drop one class in school, but had to replace it with another, would you and what would they be?

A: If I could drop any class in school it would probably be French. I would replace it with a public speaking or debate class. I really enjoy standing up and presenting.

Q: What’s your most visited website?

A: My most visited website is probably either Facebook or the website for my English class. I am constantly checking it for homework and projects.

Q: What’s your most played song right now?

A: I really don’t have a “most played” song. I listen to a lot of different music, so it’s changing just about every day.

Q: Preferred social media: Facebook, Twitter, other (and what is it), or none?

A: My preferred social media would have to be Facebook.

Q: What’s your favorite place to eat and what do you get there?

A: I love Fresh City, but the Newington one closed. I used to get smoothies whenever I went there and they were so delicious.

Q: What’s the best advice you ever got?

A: Some of the best advice I’ve gotten would be from Coach Tkaczyk. In the beginning of the cross country season he started telling me to relax. I can really be high strung and tense sometimes, especially when I get nervous. Staying calm and under control at the start and before a race is definitely something I’ve had to remember.

Q: What’s your favorite holiday?

A: My holiday would have to be the Fourth of July. I love fireworks and there’s a boat parade on Pawtuckaway Lake where we all dress up in red and white. It’s a really fun time.

Q: If you could trade places with anyone in the world for a week, who would it be and what would you do?

A: If I could trade places with anyone I would trade places with someone in a foreign country with a different culture, like China, India or Africa somewhere. I’d just want to experience the everyday life of another culture and be able to compare that to home.

Q: If you won $25 million in the lottery what would you do with the money?

A: If I had $25 million I would probably put some of it towards my college education, but then I’d want to donate to F.I.T. in Manchester, which provides housing for homeless individuals and families. I’d also want to donate to To Write Love on Her Arms, a movement dedicated to hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.
