Vailas named starting quarterback for UNH
Vailas wins QB battle
Junior Andy Vailas of Bedford was named the starting quarterback for the University of New Hampshire, which opens its season Sept. 7 at Central Michigan.
Vailas beat out sophomore Sean Goldrich, who began last season as the starter. Goldrich was injured during the second game of the 2012 season, however, and Vailas came on to start in six games and finished the season 126-for-217 for 1,558 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also rushed for 451 yards and six touchdowns on 101 carries. He ranked third in the Colonial Athletic Association and 18th in the FCS with a passer efficiency rating of 143.0.
Vailas, who was born in Concord, finished off a strong preseason by going 9-for-11 for 135 yards and a touchdown and rushing for a 32-yard touchdown in Thursday’s Blue-White Game.
