UNH men’s hockey team beats Providence in overtime, 3-2

Matt Willows scored his second goal of the game 15 seconds into overtime, and the streaking UNH men’s hockey team topped No. 3 Providence, 3-2, in Schneider Arena.

The victory was the sixth in a row for No. 20 UNH, which improved to 7-5-1 (5-2 in Hockey East). Willows scored the winner off of an assist from Nick Sorkin, and also got the scoring started at 5:16 of the first period off of an assist from Kevin Goumas.

The Wildcats upped their lead to 2-0 with 21 seconds left in the period, with Grayson Downing scoring off of assists from Dan Correale and Eric Knodel.

The lead held through two periods, though the Friars (9-2-1, 5-2) took command after the first, outshooting the Wildcats 26-12 throughout the rest of regulation. That pressure paid off late, as Noel Acciari scored at 6:28 of the third and Mark Jankowski tied the game at 14:12.

Casey DeSmith stopped 29 shots for UNH.
