The Insiders: Buy us some peanuts and Cracker Jacks at this softball semifinal

June is a great month on the sports calendar around here. There’s the Stanley Cup, the NBA Finals, the Insider’s international cribbage championships (Report: Last item not real). But it’s also when the NHIAA high school postseason tournaments get down to the nitty and the gritty.

Of course, everyone loves a Cinderella story. And playing the role of Cinderella this year, minus the blue gowns and being animated and stuff, is the Pembroke softball team, which takes on No. 1 seed Coe-Brown in tonight’s Division II semifinal showdown at Southern New Hampshire University at 7 p.m., with a spot in the championship game on the line. It’s already been quite a ride for the Spartans – they finished the regular season 8-9, but needed wins in their final two games just to get there, earning the No. 12 seed in the playoffs. All they’ve done since is upset No. 5 Sanborn (5-1) and No. 4 Windham (10-6) to earn a date with the top-ranked Bears (who beat Pembroke twice during the season).
