CANTERBURY – Adam Godbout approached his putt on the 18th hole and coolly drained a 20-25-footer for birdie, walking off the Canterbury Woods Country Club course with a 75 – just a shot behind the leader – in the final team tournament of his high school career.

Unfortunately for Concord, the day didn’t go nearly as well for the rest of his Crimson Tide teammates, who settled for fifth place in Division I after three straight years of taking home fourth.

“I know the kids on the team are good; they’re a lot better players than what they shot today,” Godbout said. “We thought we were going to win.”

Bishop Guertin dethroned Bedford by two strokes, 403-405, to take the team title. Pinkerton (413), Keene (415) and Concord (416) rounded out the top five in the 10-team field.

“We were thrilled to finish the regular season tied for first place. So that was above our expectations,” Concord Coach Ed Deshaies said. “Today there were a lot of disappointed players, and it was below our expectations. But we broke our streak anyway. We’re not in fourth place for a fourth time, we moved to fifth, unfortunately.”

BG and Bedford, with identical 24-6 records to Concord in the regular season, pulled away from the field, each with two golfers shooting in the 70s. It was the Cardinals’ first title since 2007, after runner-up finishes in 2010 and ’11.

Concord’s 416 came via Godbout’s 75, an 82 from Sam Reed, a pair of 86s from Tim Levins and Josh Pifer, and one of the 87s from Sam Tardiff and Lucas Karathanasis. Ben Bengtson (91) and Matt LaTourette (92) rounded out the Tide contingent.

Manchester Central’s Matt Paradis and Nashua North’s Brandon Gillis tied for medalist with a 2-over par 74, with Godbout a shot behind heading into tomorrow’s individual portion of the state tournament. Scores of 81 or better qualified for Saturday, when another 18 holes will combine with yesterday’s scores to crown an individual champion.

Reed missed the cut by one stroke, but wouldn’t have been able to compete anyway because she played in the girls’ individual tournament a week ago. “She’s used to that environment and can play her best when it counts,” Deshaies said of Reed’s round. “She practices a lot and plays a lot of competitions.”

“Adam, for the last several years, has been an outstanding player and has a great chance to win the individual, which would be a great feather in his cap for his senior year,” Deshaies said.

“I hit every shot pretty well, it was just some putts that could have been better,” said Godbout, who birdied both 15 and 18 but three-putted on a trio of holes. “But all in all I played pretty solid. … I didn’t really have to hit driver on any holes, I just laid up to the 150 every time, was in the fairway almost every time, and just had an easy iron to every hole. And I hit almost every green.”

If he can eliminate those three-putts tomorrow, the Tide senior will have as good a chance as anyone to take the crown and give Concord its first individual champion since Matt Delois in 2001.

“It would be pretty awesome (to win the individual title). Every tournament I play in my buddy Matt (Paradis) usually always wins, so it would be nice to beat him,” Godbout said. “He’s a good friend. He always plays good and he always makes me play better.”
